Chess is a board game that has been around for centuries. It is a challenging game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. There are many different chess openings that parents can teach their kids. These chess openings can help improve your child’s chess skills and help them to win more games. In this blog post, we will discuss three different chess openings that parents can teach their kids.  We hope you find this information helpful!

How is chess played?

Chess is a board game that is played by two people. Each player has sixteen pieces, which include eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen, and a king. The game is played on a square board with 64 squares. The objective of the game is to checkmate the other player’s king. This is done by putting the king in a position where it cannot move, and the player cannot escape from being checked.

The game can also end in a stalemate when the player’s king is not in check, but the player cannot move because they would be in check. The game can also end in a draw, which can happen if both players only have kings left or if neither player has enough pieces to checkmate the other.

There are many different ways to play chess, but using a standard set of chess pieces is the most common way. The chess board is divided into squares, and each player has 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen, and a king.  The rooks are placed on the corners of the board, and the knights and bishops are placed next to them. *The queen is placed in the middle of the board, and the king is placed next to her.

The game starts with each player controlling their pieces. White always moves first, and then players alternate turns. On each turn, a player can either move one of their pieces or capture an opponent’s piece by moving their piece to the square that the opponent’s piece is on. If a player captures all of the opponent’s pieces, or if the opponent cannot make any more moves, then that player wins the game.

There are different ways to play chess, but the most common way is to use the chess openings. Chess openings are designed to help you develop a plan for your game, and they also give you an advantage over your opponent. The most common chess openings are the Italian Game, the Sicilian Defense, the French Defense, and the Ruy Lopez.

Different chess openings!

1. The Italian Game:

The Italian game begins with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4. The point is to control the centre quickly with your pawn and knight and then put your bishop on its most dangerous square. You are also preparing to castle to safety. The Italian game is a good choice if you want your child to learn how to control the centre of the board. It also teaches them about the importance of developing their pieces before attacking.

2. The Sicilian Defense

The Sicilian Defense is the most popular choice of aggressive players with black pieces. Often White will play 2.Nf3 and 3.d4 will gain central space, but it allows Black to benefit by exchanging a central pawn for a bishop’s pawn. After the pawn exchange, Black can quickly develop their pieces and put pressure on the white centre. The Sicilian Defense is a good choice for children who like to be aggressive and take their opponents by surprise.

3. The French Defense

The French Defense is a good choice for children who want to learn how to play defensively. White often tries to build an intense centre with pawns, but Black can block it by playing their pawn to e6. Black can also benefit from exchanging pieces, making it difficult for White to attack.

4. Pirc Defense

The Pirc Defense is named after the Austrian grandmaster Vasily Smyslov. A chess opening begins with the moves e4, d3, and Nd2. The Pirc Defense is considered a “hypermodern” defence because it challenges White’s pawn centre from the flank. The Pirc Defense is a good choice for children who want to learn how to play chess strategically. White will often try to build a strong centre with pawns, but Black can challenge it by attacking from the flank. This can lead to some exciting chess games! The Pirc Defense is not a very popular choice at the grandmaster level, but it is still a solid defence against 1.e4. Black’s pieces can all develop into natural squares, and Black can equalise the position with careful play.

5. London System

The London System is a chess opening that is considered to be very solid and easy to learn. It is named after the city of London, where it was first played in 1883. The London System is characterised by the moves 1.d4 followed by 2.Nf3 and 3.Bf4. White’s pieces are all developed into natural squares, and Black’s pieces are somewhat cramped. The London System can be used against various chess openings, but it is most commonly used against the Sicilian Defense.

6. Danish Gambit

The Danish Gambit is a chess opening characterised by the moves 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Nxc3. White gives up a pawn to gain control of the centre of the board and develop their pieces quickly. The Danish Gambit is a bold opening that can lead to exciting and intricate games. The Danish Gambit was popularised by the Danish grandmaster Lauritz Berg in the late 19th century. It has been played by many of the greatest chess players in history, including World Champions Emanuel Lasker and Bobby Fischer

How to teach your students to recognise fake news

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE,DONDAICHA

BLOG NO*150

Fake news is another hazard of technology advancement and networking because it always existed but now as people are active on social media websites, students see various viral posts that include news, content and pictures which affect their mindset towards certain things/people/scenarios to a great extent. The Fake news has a wide reach through the INTERNET and most people fall for such news because these are conveyed in such a way that it seems actual. Students are the most vulnerable to such fake news viral posts because they are young minds and have little knowledge of the factual data and hence, they easily get influenced by the fake news sources.

Before the advent of the internet, we knew where to find information: television, newspapers and libraries. But now, with a limitless world of information at our fingertips, the challenge is how to tell which information is trustworthy – and which isn’t.

Misinformation is a growing online problem. Entire websites have sprung up in recent years to disseminate fake news. Educated adults can be fooled easily – and kids are even more at risk. Only 2% of children said they felt confident in distinguishing fake news from real news. And this inability is a source of anxiety and fear. Half of children said they worried about not being able to spot fake news, and two thirds said they trust all news less as a result. Teachers have identified this as a real issue for student wellbeing too*, with two thirds of those surveyed agreeing that it increases their students’ anxiety levels.

The good news is that teaching this kind of media literacy actually builds 21st century skills like digital literacy, communication and critical thinking. In addition, developing these skills will help your students become informed global citizens.

Here we are discussing the sources of fake news, types of fake news and what steps students should take to save themselves and others from this trending hazard –

Sources of fake news –

•           *Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp etc.

•           Fake news websites

•           Fake news websites using names of real media channels or websites with slight difference in the name or website URL. for example – real news website: timesofindia.indiatimes.com and fake news website: timesindia.com

•           Rumours spread around in social circles

Types of fake news –

1. For entertainment purpose– Use of pictures and content that is used to entertain the readers and it has nothing factual but the audience does not understand it is based on facts or not.

For example – Memes/Trolls regarding the life of engineering students; it is used for fun but some people develop this understanding that engineering course students ‘actually’ go through such situations.

2. Use of fake image or title for Irrelevant content – It relates two things which have no logical similarity, where photos’ title or news/article headline promotes a story but the content does not match with the headline or picture.

For example – ‘Amitabh Bachchan is in Hospital’ with an image showing him ill/wounded but then the content mentions that he is shooting a scene for his upcoming movie.

Such headlines/title/pictures make the reader click on the link and increase the user count for these websites which help them (websites) make revenue.

3. Misinterpreted information – Content that presents real information, even imagery and video, but is manipulated in some way to tell a different story by misuse of information to show an issue in completely different meaning.

For example – A viral video of a mother making her child do homework in a strict manner but it is interpreted as ‘Some teacher harassing kid’. People share such videos without cross-checking and it harms the image of people involved.

4. Completely baseless content – This type of story is completely fake (i.e. never existed) and designed with the intention to do harm.

For example – Some group spreading fake news regarding religious beliefs of some people with an intention to start conflicts among different religious groups.

5. Rumours spread by blind followers – Sometimes, just to make people a follower /to increase fan following of some person, their blind followers spread words which are not true.

For example – Followers of some politician spread fake stories about his good deeds/work for society so that people start following him and vote for him.

Overall we can say that fake news is intended to influence the young minds such as for political gain/influence or sometimes, people want to show off their connections with popular people, organisation, brand or anything that is of high importance for people.

How should school students deal with fake news?

Ask them to reflect on their reactions

A lot of fake news is designed to get clicks and engagement – it therefore needs to elicit a strong reaction – outrage, anger, fear or even happiness. So, if your students have a strong reaction to an article, it’s important for them to stop and reflect on their reaction*. It could be a clue that what they’re reading is actually fake news.

Develop their critical thinking skills

Critical thinking and digital literacy go hand in hand. Encourage your students to work on their critical thinking skills by teaching them the following steps when they come across a news story they might think is fake:

1. Who created this content?

Whether it’s a video, an article, an infographic or a social media post, ask your students to think about who created it. Is it a journalist or reporter who works in mainstream media? Is it a celebrity? Is the creator anonymous?*

2. What else do you know about this topic?

Students should think about what they already know about the topic. Does what they know match up with the story they are reading? Does it sound believable, or is it surprising? Do they know enough to make an informed decision on how trustworthy the story is?

This will help them make sounder judgements as to the veracity of the story – or at least, it will help them consider whether they are in a position to trust the news.

3. Do some research

If students aren’t sure about the source of the story or their own background information, they can do some research to see if the story is being reported elsewhere.

Take this fun quiz to see if your students can guess which headlines are true, and which are fake news.

Share trustworthy news sources with your students

More generally, it’s good to get into the habit of talking about the news with your students. Children and teenagers enjoy reading about current affairs and sharing what they’ve learned. So, relate your classroom topics to current affairs whenever possible. providing your students with some trustworthy news sources, so they know what responsible journalism looks like.

Adolescence and Academic excellence

HAST PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE.DODAICHA

BLOG NO 148

 Adolescence is that time of an individual’s life when everything is taking a turn on to the fast lane. The children are getting aware of the physical changes in their body and the inevitable gear up to adulthood. These transition years are a mix of diverse experiences torn between painful and rewarding.

Academic excellence suddenly takes priority. Broadly defined, *achievement concerns the development of motives, capabilities, interests and behavior that have to do with performance in evaluative situations* ( according to Steinberg, 1990.) During adolescence this evaluative process takes place in an educational setting.

In a general sense, academic achievement is the current level of a student’s learning. More specifically for the purpose of accountability, academic achievement refers to the percentage of students at a school whose learning currently meets or exceeds their grade-level standards*.

Academic achievement during adolescence is predicted by interpersonal relationships, namely parental engagement in adolescents’ education. Most parents are highly involved in their ward’s education when they are in the lower grades. But as they grow older,  especially during the adolescence stage when a power struggle ensues in the home front between the parents and the child, *the child is given the freedom to make his/her own study schedule

.If however They might start misusing it and it will adversely reflect in their scores. Quite often parents are heard lamenting how their bright child scoring the 1st marks in lower grades has suddenly started bringing in bad grades in puberty years.

The reason more often than not is that the child has not had that mature conversation with the parents, wherein the pros and cons of the new found freedom* have been discussed and explained. If the adolescent is made aware of responsible freedom then most of the children will continue to excel in their studies. Parents need to unobtrusively continue monitoring their child’s academic progress.

On the other hand, parents who continue to have a tight grip over their child’s academic progress need to accept that their ward is blooming into an adult and as a young adult deserves to be trusted with more responsibility. Though it is scary to give them the freedom, if this is not taught effectively at this stage then the future of the child as an independent adult is in jeopardy.

So ultimately as always it is a healthy balance of right and responsibility shared by the parent and their adolescent child that is going to result in measurable academic progress, which will pave the way for academic excellence that is benched marked collectively by the family.

The intrapersonal motivation however continues to be the game changer. Parents and teachers can only go that far in pushing the adolescent towards academic glory. The adolescent who is maturing into a young adult can achieve only what he or she wants. The child needs to logically understand that the grades scored in academics will bind them for eternity. They have to comprehend and accept the importance of scoring high.

They have to stick to self-discipline to achieve their goals while adhering to a schedule made by them.

The adolescent should be passionate about academic excellence and nothing can stand in their way.

All the achievers from underprivileged backgrounds who have cracked competitive exams are stalwarts’ examples for how important or even how it is the only important component for achieving academic excellence. If the child visualizes s/he will definitely achieve it.

Last but not the least the institution to which the adolescent is attached makes all the difference in the academic excellence of an adolescent. The infrastructure and resources at the school/college will enable the young adults to channelize and do extra work towards academic goals & .this EXECTLYis one of the  REASONS for overall excellent performance of  CHILDREN  at our  HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL,DONDAICHA

The toppers  achieve irrespective of where they study but *for the majority of those adolescents who fall in the average scores area the teachers/mentors make all the difference. Many adolescents have found new love for a subject they detested just because of the teacher. Our Hasti school with the right calibre of dedicated experienced team of teachers  enable the young adult to achieve academic excellence to the level envisaged collectively by the adolescent, parent and teacher. Academic excellence by adolescents is the game changer for their lives as it sets the stage for college or future vocational training and opportunities.

We can safely conclude that like in life *parents, teachers, institutions and even society play a vital role in the adolescent achieving academic excellence but ultimately it is the adolescent himself/herself who is responsible for the level of academic excellence achieved by them. As always nothing is impossible for a person who dreams big.

HAPPINESS INDEX FOR CHILDFRN ,

HOW TO MEASURE HAPPINESS IN CHILDRN,

Happiness and positivity can make a huge difference to your child’s wellbeing and achievement.  Here is what we at our Hasti school try to do to make children happy.by prevent bullying , *by treating children fairly at school, by listening to children patiently , by including them in different activities of their interest, by telling children what they need to know and by trusting them and supporting them

In recent years, the media has been full of stories about the increase in mental health problems in children and young people. Children of primary school age are worrying about exam pressure,

It’s difficult to unpick the reasons for the current epidemic of unhappiness amongst children , but we think  that the pace of modern life is partly responsible.

‘The world has sped up since we were kids, and we all have busy agendas – children included,’ ‘You can see, when the school holidays come around,  the kids are  exhausted too. And it’s not just physical exhaustion; life is emotionally gruelling.’

The pressure to succeed at school also plays a part,  with primary schools more focused on results than ever before. ‘The system puts pressure on teachers to deliver good  results, which then filters down to the children,’

The irony is that a happy child is more likely to perform well at school. Research has shown that mental and emotional problems affect children’s academic achievement. In contrast, children who are happy tend to gain higher grades, and, in turn, those with higher grades tend to be happier later in life

Apart from  what our Hasti school is doing via different types of CCA/ECA to keep children happy , as a parents there’s a lot you can do to help children  to be happier on a day-to-day basis. These include:

•           Keeping a gratitude journal. ‘Every day – even if it’s been a rubbish day – your child can write down 10 things that they’re grateful for but usually take for granted. This stops them focusing on the negative,’s.

•           Laughing. It sounds obvious, but* it releases feel-good hormones and reduces stress hormones. Sit down together and watch a funny DVD or look up silly videos on YouTube*.

•           Performing random acts of kindness, such as making someone a cup of tea (unprompted) helping with the washing-up or reading their younger sibling a story.

•           Writing a letter to themselves. ‘Get them to imagine they’re 30 years old and writing to their childhood self. What advice would they give themselves?’ .

•           Encouraging a growth mindset. ‘Praise children for hard work and perseverance rather than results, rewarding the effort rather than the outcome.

•           Exercising. There’s a strong link between physical activity and mental wellbeing, so walking or cycling to school, playing  football on ground  after school or taking up dance or tennis lessons could boost your child’s emotional health.

•           Celebrating their strengths. ‘At school, if a child is rubbish at maths, they’re just given more maths, which makes them feel worse. So at home, focus on praising the things they’re good at and doing more of them,’.

•           Reading together. ‘You can’t underestimate the impact of sitting on your child’s bed and reading them a bedtime story – even if they’re perfectly capable of reading by themselves,’ ( HASTI VACHASPATI ,FAMILY READING)

•           Being more sociable. ‘Instead of walking around with your heads down, smile at everyone within 10 feet and make eye contact and say “hello” to everyone within five feet.’

•           Hugging. ‘Most hugs only last 2.1 seconds, but to get the maximum love-surge, they need to last seven seconds or longer, so introducing the seven-second hug is a really easy way of making your child feel special,’ .

Above all, (try to keep the importance of happiness at the front of your mind: easier said than done when you’re worrying about homework, projects etc.

‘All we want at that moment is for them to be happy, and that’s something we all need to remember as our children get older.’

Since we know happiness, motivates individual activities, raises awareness, strengthens creativity and facilitates social relationships. So happiness is the important key in educational system,

happiness is one of the main emotions a person can have. The others were feeling *sad,* angry*, excited, upset, frustrated, lonely, shy, anxious, afraid, embarrassed, guilty, joyful or annoyed.

The dictionary says that happiness is ‘feeling pleasure or contentment’.  other words to describe happiness, like ‘joy’, ‘achievement’ and being ‘cool, calm and collected’. Happiness also meant being satisfied with how things are for you, being with people you want to be with, and not being depressed*.

Children we asked said that people are not born as happy or unhappy sorts of people. They are made happy or unhappy by what happens to them.

you ‘can’t be born happy, but can be born into happiness.’

Money can help you to be happy, but money on its own cannot make you happy. A lot of what makes you happy is not about money – for example, family.

Many thought that children are becoming unhappier these days as life becomes more competitive, with higher expectations of children and young people, increasing pressure and examinations at school, and worries about the economy and recession.

Calculate your score

Step 1. Items marked (R) should be scored in reverse:

If you gave yourself a “1,” cross it out and change it to a “6.”

Change “2” to a “5”

Change “3” to a “4”

Change “4” to a “3”

Change “5” to a “2”

Change “6” to a “1”

Step 2 Add the numbers for all 29 questions. (Use the converted numbers for the 12 items that are reverse scored.)

Step 3. Divide by 29. So your happiness score = the total (from step 2) divided by 29.

I recommend you record your score and the date. Then you’ll have the option to compare your score now with your score at a later date. This can be especially helpful if you are trying some of the exercises, and actively working on increasing your happiness.

INTERPRETATION OF SCORE

1-2 : Not happy. If you answered honestly and got a very low score, you’re probably seeing yourself and your situation as worse than it really is. I recommend taking the Depression Symptoms test (CES-D Questionnaire) at the University of Pennsylvania’s “Authentic Happiness” Testing Center. You’ll have to register, but this is beneficial because there are a lot of good tests there and you can re-take them later and compare your scores.

2-3 : Somewhat unhappy. Try some of the exercises on this site like the Gratitude Journal & Gratitude Lists, or the Gratitude Visit; or take a look at the “Authentic Happiness” site mentioned immediately above.

3-4 : Not particularly happy or unhappy. A score of 3.5 would be an exact numerical average of happy and unhappy responses. Some of the exercises mentioned just above have been tested in scientific studies and have been shown to make people lastingly happier.

4 : Somewhat happy or moderately happy. Satisfied. This is what the average person scores.

4-5 : Rather happy; pretty happy. Check other score ranges for some of my suggestions.

5-6 : Very happy. Being happy has more benefits than just feeling good. It’s correlated with benefits like health, better marriages, and attaining your goals. Check back – I’ll be writing a post about this topic soon.

6 : Too happy. Yes, you read that right. Recent research seems to show that there’s an optimal level of happiness for things like doing well at work or school, or for being healthy, and that being “too happy” may be associated with lower levels of such things. . MY SCORE WAS 1-2 WHICH AFTER WARD CHANGED TO 3-4 .EVERY ONE SHOULD TRY *

Many parents often seen complaining about  increased irritability , aggression and anger in  their children. Multiple factors can contribute to a particular child’s struggles with anger, irritability, and aggression (behavior that can cause harm to oneself or another). One common trigger  is frustration when a child cannot get what he or she wants or is asked to do something that he or she might not feel like doing.

 Inadequate quality sleep or sleep disorder  in children is a growing problem . *During daytime hours, children with inadequate sleep may also  *:

•           seem more moody and irritable

•           act in a more disruptive way

•           fail to perform at their usual level in school

It has been noticed that a wide range of school and college students are sleep deprived, and most often are not getting enough sleep that leads to problems with regards to their sleep, learning ability and their memory* .

Here are few tips to improve sleep

•           1. Keeping a regular sleep schedule- Waking up at the same time every morning even if it’s a weekend or a holiday .

•           2.Exercise regularly- three times or more per week. Studies confirm that students  in good physical condition get to sleep quicker and sleep better. Try to get in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, five to seven hours before bedtime.

•           3.Avoid caffeine- For many students, intake of coffee and or tea  interferes with their sleep. If it does, cut back or avoid it altogether in the hours before you go to bed. Tea coffee in the evening disturbs sleep.

4.Savor your last hour before bed- Some students take longer to wind down than others. Read a book for pleasure. Avoid television or your laptop. Drink  warm milk. Hunger may disturb sleep. A light bedtime snack (especially warm milk or similar drink) seems to *help many individuals sleep.

•           5. Wake up early- Getting up early to complete homework when necessary, rather than studying into the late hours is always advisable*.  students are more productive during morning hours than late at night.

o          6.Increase bright light exposure during the day -* Our body has a natural time-keeping clock known as your circadian rhythm*. Natural sunlight or bright light during the day helps keep your circadian rhythm healthy. This improves daytime energy, as well as night time sleep quality. *2 hours of bright light exposure during the day increased the amount of sleep by 2 hours and sleep efficiency by 80%. Daily

o          7.Reduce blue light exposure during the day – Exposure to light during the day is beneficial, but night time light exposure has the opposite effect  Blue light — which electronic devices like smartphones and computers emit in large amounts — is the worst

o          8.Don’t eat late in the evening – Eating late at night may negatively affect both sleep quality and the natural release of HGH  hormone (HGH Hormone from Pitutary gland  improves learning ,memory and bone health)

o          9.Relax and clear your mind in the evening- Many people have a pre-sleep routine that helps them relax. Like  listening to relaxing music, reading a book, taking a hot bath, meditating, deep breathing, and visualization.

10.*Quality Sleep has  a key role in our health One large review linked insufficient sleep to an increased risk of obesity by 89% in children* and 55% in adults*.

Other studies conclude that *getting less than 7–8 hours per night increases your risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

If you’re interested in optimal health and well-being, it’s recommended that you make sleep a top priority and incorporate some of the tips above*.

Mindfullness

BLOGNO144                                                                                                                                                                                                 IMPORTANCE OF MINDFULNESS

When our Hasti school started new practice*in 2014-2015 *the meditation for the time gap  between when one teacher leaves the class after period and other teacher enters the class , the *teacher  leaving the class after period use to ask children to  close their eyes & meditate and the other teacher entering the class to ask children to open the eyes, there use to be golden silence during the time. It was one of the mindfulness activity which was the brain child of Major Waghela sir the member of  Board of governors of our HASTI SCHOOL

many questioned this activity  but now the importance is known and many schools are following this .

 Our minds fill with chatter, our view of the world becomes tainted and distorted, and our ability to be present is lost.

With heightened academic pressure trickling down to kids as early as kindergarten, resulting in less time for play and the arts

Children today are faced with an unprecedented  amount of stress and anxiety. 25% of 13- to 18-year-olds  experience an anxiety disorder according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. Such early stress levels can negatively impact learning, memory, behavior, and both physical and mental health,of students

A new study suggests that mindfulness education  lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students’ ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.

Compared to the students who are  trained in mindfulness scored higher in math, had 24% more social behaviors, and were 20% less aggressive.

“Mindfulness is a powerful tool that supports children in calming themselves, focusing their attention, and interacting effectively with others, all critical skills for functioning well in school and in life,

 “Incorporating *mindfulness into education has been linked to improving academic and social and emotional learning*. Also, mindfulness strengthens some underlying development processes—such as focus, resilience, and self-soothing—that will help kids in the long run.”

3 Benefits of Mindfulness in Schools

Governments around the world  and NEP are beginning to see the vast potential of mindfulness in education.

Mindfulness in schools can help by:

•           Improving academic results

•           Increasing children’s mental health

•           Fostering resilience and character building

Indeed, mindfulness improves the capacity of a child’s brain to manage cognitive processes such as problem solving, memory, and reasoning.

benefits of mindfulness*

Countless research studies have proven that mindfulness has many significant psychological, cognitive, and physical benefits.

Psychological benefits

Stress

It appears that mindfulness helps us manage existing stress and offers protection from future upset.

Happiness

 happiness is not just something that feels good; it offers protection against disease (morbidity) and even death (mortality).

 Cognitive benefits

Memory

Mindfulness practices not only have a positive effect on stress; they also benefit sleep and memory

Creativity

Haven’t we all returned from a walk or run with new ideas to tackle existing problems?

And there are other cognitive benefits too. Mindfulness directly improves our ability to tackle problems. It reduces mind wandering and offers the potential to increase capacity in the rest of the brain for extra cognitive processing.

Mindfulness changes you psychologically, cognitively, and physically.

 how do we teach mindfulness in schools?Happiness & SWB

Following are four ways to incorporate mindfulness into your curriculum and bring calm to your classroom.

Mindfulness Through Breath

When we are stressed or anxious, we often take shallow breaths  into our chests. By breathing deeply into your belly, you can use your breath to calm both your body and mind.

2. Mindfulness Through Sensory Experiences

  Sensory experiences also help children focus and relax. Try listening to relaxing music or other calming sounds in the classroom. You might also take the children outside to hear the sounds of nature.

3. Mindfulness Through Guided Imagery

Guided imagery develops children’s imaginations. It also helps to integrate learning with prior knowledge. When you start a new topic in your classroom, have your students close their eyes (if that’s comfortable) and slowly talk them through a pretend journey. For example, if you’re studying the ocean, have them imagine getting into underwater vehicles and cruising through the ocean waters, looking for fish, animals, and plants. End

4. Mindfulness Through MovementI

Introducing movement into your classroom allows your students to tap into their natural way of learning. Yoga is a simple strategy for adding movement to your school day. Children

I have identified *eight activities that are relatively easy to implement in classrooms and schools. With a little practice, these can be part of any educator’s pedagogical toolbox.

1. Silent 60: Start the class by having all students sit quietly for 60 seconds to get themselves ready for learning. You can add a focus on a particular sound in the room, an image you provide (e.g., a dot on a piece of paper, an abstract picture you put up on a Board), or their breathing. Start with 15 seconds for early elementary students and gradually increase. Begin with 20–30 seconds for upper elementary.

2. Powerful Listening: Ring a bell, use a wind chime, or employ another object that makes a long, trailing sound. Ask students to listen and raise their hands when they no longer can hear the sound. After all agree that the sound has stopped, set a timer for one minute, ask students to sit quietly, and then when time is up, ask them what they heard during that minute.

3. One Minute for Good: Start the class by having students reflect for a minute about something that has gone well or something that they are grateful for( GOOD DEED AS WE WRITE DIARY IN SCOUT AND GUIDE). This can be done in writing, pair shares, or small or large group discussions. Larger groups work best for early elementary.

4. Morning Classroom Conversations: Start the day with a quote ( GOOD THOUGHT OF THE DAY )that can stimulate short conversations to help middle and high school students begin to interact with classmates in supportive ways.

5. Three Breaths: Have students take three deep breaths at regular intervals, such as before class changes or whenever strong feelings of anxiety or tension arise. Teachers should instruct students on this breathing technique and create visual reminders and prompting signals for students to begin. This is a valuable practice for staff as well,

FOR WE TEACHERS too

6. Body Scan: Educators benefit from learning to focus on their bodies. Make sure you are feeling centered with both feet on the floor as you teach your classes or meet with students or colleagues. Notice when and where you are feeling tension or when your breathing is shallow or labored, and use Three Breaths (or more!) to help you feel some relief. Don’t hesitate to let students or colleagues know that you are taking a few moments to gather yourself via breathing.

7. Speak Your Mantra: Develop a phrase that helps you keep focus and keep perspective. Repeat it often—when Some examples:

•           “I am preparing all of these children for an uncertain future.”

•           “I want all students to enjoy well-being, happiness, and peace.”

•           “My goal is to prepare students for the tests of life—not just a life of tests.”
