Our Hasti public school  believes that Life skill development is a tool to empower children and to safeguard their future by providing them overall development in today’s era of globalisation.

Teaching life skills helps students build confidence in communication and collaborative skills, provides them with the right developmental resources, find out of the box problem-solving solutions, gives them a way to communicate and develop relationships and teaches them accountability.

Life skills can be broken down into three parts:

1.  Personal and Well-being skills are the essential life skills we need to help maintain a healthy body and mind. These skills include resilience, self-control and self-awareness. They include skills such as how we recognise, manage and cope with our emotions.

There are 10 essential creative skills that can be taught to students to achieve this. These include Public Speaking, Organic Farming, Music, Cooking, Theatre, Carpentry, Taekwondo, Art Education and Clay Modelling.

Positive values such as sportsmanship, teamwork and honesty, and skills such as aiming for best personal performance, positive self-esteem and group participation are achieved by PE classes.

It is also the responsibility of parent, to teach certain basic life skills to children, including social, interpersonal, coordination, problem-solving, and creative skills*. Children who are well-acquainted with these skills may find it easier to make decisions, meet day-to-day challenges, and handle situations better in the absence of elders.

Life skills are to be taught to children from an early age. Parents must make sure that their children learn and practice these skills to grow into successful adults in the future.

Life skills are based on a lot of our experiences that are first hand or at least relatable. For example, teaching concepts like money without actually showing students the importance and how to budget, save or invest is never going to be useful when they grow up

The World Health Organization defines life skills as “a group of psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that help people make informed decisions, solve problems,

think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathize with others, and cope with and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner.”

Empowering your children to hone their life skills will help them make logical decisions and learn what to do in different situations and how to do them.

Developing life skills is a lifelong process and helps individuals grow, become mature, and achieve success.

Building essential life skills is an exercise that helps children develop proper judgment and good habits. Life skills also help develop children’s personalities, talents, and mental and physical abilities.

You can provide them with paper and tape and request them to wrap gifts for family members or grandparents for special occasions. Gift wrapping is an excellent way to increase your child’s motor abilities and hand-eye coordination

.

17.       Gardening

Allow your child to assist you in the garden, and learn about the various kinds of flowers, fruits, and even vegetables. Instruct your children to water their plants frequently, while the older kids can be involved in weeding, painting fence panels and mow under the supervision of a parent. It is also possible to introduce them to fun and exciting gardening ideas or garden design ideas DIY(DO IT YOURSELF )

18.       Looking after pets

The presence of pets in your home can allow your child to develop empathy, and also learn to be responsible and caring. Children can help clean up the cages, cook meals, take the animals for a walk and even prepare the beds for them.

19.       Digital literacy

Generation X’s children spend a significant amount of time in front of their screens. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a few guidelines to make sure they’re safe in the online world. First, let your child to use the internet responsibly and with a legitimate reason. Then, show them how to utilize internet wisely and safely.

20.       Doing chores and cleaning

Involving children with cleaning tasks can be difficult. Begin by asking them to keep their rooms clean or make their bed and then arrange their tables. It is also possible to request them to help prepare the table for meals or wash up after eating. Doing chores helps children learn their roles and develop independence.

21.       Preparing for event

It is important to let your child prepare on their own. Let them choose the clothes for their day and put it on by their own. Help them clean their teeth and have bath and then comb their hair before going to school (These are the fundamental skills that every child needs to learn at an early age.)

22.       Table manners

Teach your child basic table manners, like eating with a knife and fork when eating, washing their hands prior to meals as well as eating food with mouths shut. It is also possible to teach your child to behave in a restaurant and how to make a reservation for food.

23.       Swimming

Swimming is among the most important life skills needed by youngsters. It helps children in a variety of ways both mentally and physically and can help them develop confidence. It is also a great method of teaching youngsters about water safety and increase their endurance.

24.       Utilizing maps

Your child should be guided through the streets of the city. Help them remember the various routes using landmarks. You can also ask your child to guide you back to your home every time you travel to ensure they can remember the exact route. Learn to teach them to read maps and how to use the GPS.

25.       Travelling

It is crucial that your child is aware of the fundamentals of travel. From public transportation to biking, ensure you’re educated on how to travel from one location to the next. For example, they should be taught how to purchase tickets for a metro or bus ticket and also explain which buses or metros will take you to your home.

Life skills for children play a crucial role in their overall development and growth. They help them to succeed in all areas of their lives in the correct manner. Skills for life help children unlock their potential and increase their self-esteem, making them feel more self-sufficient. Making them more adaptable and learning to adapt will also improve their decision-making abilities to be a harmonious member of the world.

So, it is important to consider the teaching of these skills to your child at a younger stage, in a way that they will find entertaining and engaging. Remember that teaching life skills to your child takes dedication, patience, and constant effort.

Working memory in Children

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE ,DONDAICHA

BLOG NO.224

Working Memory Definition:

Working Memory is the thinking skill that focuses on memory-in-action: the ability to remember and use relevant information while in the middle of an activity. For example, a child is using their Working Memory as they recall the steps of a recipe while cooking a favorite meal*.

Children who have trouble with their Working Memory skills will often have difficulty remembering their teachers’ instructions, recalling the rules to a game, or completing other tasks that involve actively calling up important information.

*Video games can help improve Working Memory by allowing kids to practice their memory skills while in the midst of a fun and immersive gaming experience. Many games require that the player learn and repeatedly recall information in order to succeed and advance to higher levels.

Working memory involves the ability to keep information active in your mind for a short time (2-3 seconds) to be able to use it for further processing.

Working memory is a temporary storage system and is vital to perform day-to-day tasks (e.g. following instructions, responding in conversations, listening and reading comprehension, organization).

Working memory can be commonly confused with short-term memory. Short-term memory refers to the short-term information required for a verbal or visual task (e.g., remembering a phone number, blending sounds into words when reading, remembering objects, colors, location, direction). Working memory involves the manipulation and transformation of verbal and visual information (e.g., remembering instructions and their content to then carry it out, remembering what to say when called upon, remembering your place on the page while reading, reverse sequences of objects/numbers).

Working memory is crucial for academic performance as it is an important part of some critical functions like planning, initiating, task monitoring and organizing. *At school, the areas of learning that are greatly affected by poor working memory are: Math, Reading Comprehension, Complex problem solving, and Test taking. The biggest impact on school work occurs from difficulties with Math and reading comprehension.

In children with poor working memory, it is much like the bucket has a hole in the bottom. You can keep tipping in glasses of water (information/knowledge) but it continually drains out.

A child with working memory difficulties might:

Have difficulty organizing/completing a task with multiple steps (i.e., they often stop, or they lose their place).

Miss details in instructions and fail to keep track of which stage they are at.

•                 Make mistakes in writing and counting in the classroom.

•                 Fail to self-correct classroom work.

•                 Are easily distracted when not highly interested in an activity.

•                 Find it difficult to wait for their turn.

•                 Have poor organization skills.

•                 *Show low average to average language abilities but poor   –

•                  academic performance.

•                 Have difficulty while reading.

•                 Demonstrate difficulties with math calculations in their head.

•                 Find complex problem solving challenging.

There are various ways to improve working memory which will help in overcoming difficulties related to it. Following are few of them:

•           Consult a Speech Therapist for a language assessment to rule out possible underlying language concerns and to probe working memory skills.

•           Structure the environment and use strategies to reduce the working memory load – for eg, break large goals into smaller ones, simplify information, chunk it, slow down the pace of delivery of information

•           Teach strategies for coping with working memory inefficiencies, for eg – minimize the load on working memory so the child can increase their capacity to learn.

•           Break tasks into simple steps: Provide short, simple instructions and make sure the child has mastered the first step before going onto the next.

•           Use simple language: Use clear, specific language when making requests and, if necessary, show them what you want them to do.

•           When you have given an instruction to a child, encourage them to repeat it back to you to ensure that the child has grasped/understood what is expected.

•           Complete repetitions of new activities to ensure the child has mastered the task. A child with poor working memory will require much more repetition to learn a new task than other children.

•           Use visuals to assist the child remember the steps involved in a task (e.g., morning routine).

•           Get close to the child to ensure they are able to hear you and see your face; get down to their level.

•           Slow the pace in challenging activities to allow the child time to process and complete the activity.

•           Reduce background noise and distractions to help a child to maintain attention long enough to obtain the information required to complete a task. Reducing distractions lessens the amount of information the child has to process.

•           Engage other senses: to help information “stick”.

•           Build routines, structure and familiarity into activities to lessen the amount of new information the child has to process.

•           Create a working memory folder or booklet of important information the child can utilize at home or in the classroom to lessen the working memory load, for e.g., times tables, spelling rules, alphabet, numerical order from 0-100 etc.

Following are few activities which can be conducted at school classroom to improve working memory in children:

Teach visualization: Support your child to make a picture in their head of what they have just read or heard. Ask them to mentally picture what they need to do for a specific task (e.g., get everything ready to make a cake) and then get them to draw that picture. As they get better at visualizing then just get them to describe what they can see in their head without having to draw it.

Matching games are great for visual memory (e.g., Memory, Snap, Pairs, Bingo). You might also make games that require visual memory like the car reciting letters and numbers on license plates then say them backwards.

Get your child to teach you: Encourage them to explain how to do a new skill they are learning and teach you how to do it. By working on their explanation, it will support them to make sense of what they have learned and file it away in their memory.

Word list games: such as “*I went to the shop/zoo/beach and I saw….”.

The game ‘Guess Who?’: The child has to eliminate characters by asking questions about what their character looks like using memory of the facial features.

“ *Give the child more than one instruction at a time and see if they can remember them al*l (e.g., “sit down, put your hands on your head then blink three times” or ‘Obstacle Courses’ where your child needs to complete an obstacle course to reach a ‘goodie’ by remembering the instructions to get there (e.g., ‘Go under the table, behind the chair, and through the tunnel”)

Threading beads/building a block tower: Sit in a circle with a group/or face to face and each person takes a turn to say two colors that you both need to thread/build. Take in turns to tell each other two colors and slowly increase the number of colors to get to thread/build onto their tower.

“

“Picnic time”: Give your child the name of 2-3 things that they need to collect to bring to a picnic. Have them collect the items and bring them to a picnic rug (you can use pictures of items or the real item).

**At the end whatever works for a child should be introduced, sustained and monitored. Each child is different and all the listed initiatives will vary depending on the level of the particular child. TEACHERS at our Hasti school  school focus on improving working memory parents are requested to conduct  activities indicated above  thewith rmemory of children in class room, at home . BACKEWARD COUNTING

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE ,DONDAICHA

BLOG NO.223

Counting back is a method of learning subtraction by taking away the smaller number from the larger number by counting backward from the larger number.

BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO REDUCE THE STRESS AND TO MAKE MIND SHARPERu.

WE ALL KNOW THAT*Along with Anxiety, which is an intense and persistent feeling of fear, worry, and uneasiness, has become increasingly common in children  and can strike anyone at any time. However  there are several methods you can try to keep your anxiety in check but  *one of the best &  simple technique is of  of counting backwards .

There are many basic concepts that kids must learn at an early age. It makes their life simpler such as counting. The idea of counting helps kids to count many things and promotes mathematical skills. Forward counting is necessary to learn for kids. But have you ever thought that counting backwards is also a part of the academic curriculum that kids must know?

Backward counting is decreasing one number each time from the count. It is also called reverse counting. When a child  is reading any book, they will turn a page every time they finish reading one page. But when the kid turns pages backwards, they will learn about backward counting very easily.

Suppose there are 12 bananas, and the monkey eats one at a time. It means every time one banana is reduced. Count bananas each time when the monkey is eating. It might help  to understand backward counting numbers.

To teach backward counting,  there are varieties of activities,  few are given hereunder.

1. Hide and Seek

Playing hide and seek is an excellent idea to teach kids about reverse counting. Ask a kid to count either from 5 or 10. It can be a perfect practice to teach about it.

2. Hopscotch

Mark out a track on the floor and write numbers from 1 to 10. Ask your kid to jump from the largest to the smallest number.

3. Building Towers Backwards

Take some construction toys with numbers written on them, for example, LEGO. Start building it with the largest number. It will show the backward numbers.

4. Pass the Ball Count Down

Take a ball you pass around the circle. The first child says’ 10 ’ (or the number you are starting from). The second child says ‘9’, and so on.

5. Dance Counting

Put a random song and do some easy steps. Chant the numbers backwards with the music. This will help your kid to learn reverse counting.

Learning the concept of “forward counting” is a priority for children. As they learn about counting, it might be easier for them to learn about relatable theory. It makes them more confident about academic curricula. Once they become confident, you can also teach backward counting. It is easy to write backward counting, but orally, it is tricky.

Learning to count backwards can be a valuable skill for kids of all ages  It can help with things like learning to tell time and understanding place value in Maths. Plus, it’s just a fun way to challenge yourself!

Backward counting can be a difficult skill for kids to master, but it’s an important one. Using the fun and interactive way of learning backward counting. With patience and perseverance, you can conquer backward counting in no time.

Aishwarya Raj, a clinical psychologist practising at Delhi NCR, said that counting backwards can help by allowing the brain to focus on something logical in order to break up anxious thoughts. “This is especially helpful for those who are prone to ruminate on anxious thoughts.

By counting backwards, the brain is given a task to focus on something that is not related to anxious thoughts. This can help to clear the mind of anxiety, allowing the individual to stay focused and calm,” she explained.

counting backwards forces your brain to return to the present and allows the body to come back from a hyper-aroused state to a balanced one.

“When you’re counting backwards, you are taking your mind out of the fight-flight-freeze-fawn setting and the act of focusing on a simple task acts as a positive distraction from the spiralling thoughts*

Backward counting  can also help reduce physical symptoms of anxiety, such as dizziness, nausea, tightness in the chest, and feelings of dread.

By counting back, the individual is able to redirect negative thought processes into positive ones.Dear readers ,your feed back will help me in improving the blog.communicate your valued suggestions and donot forget to visit our school web site

POWER OF ENQUIRY

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE ,DONDAICHA

BLOG NO.221

YOU MAY BE INTELLEGENT IF YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION ,

BUT

YOU ARE WISE IF YOU ASK THE QUESTION                                                                                                                                                      *

I believe and I am of the opinion that  HAD  ARJUNA NOT ASKED QUESTIONS THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE GEETA

Such is the power of  AN Enquiry .

Therefore at our Hasti school the *home work is not to bring the answers to the question given  but TO FRAME THE QUESTIONS FROM THE PORTION TAUGHT ON THE DAY  this make children TO LOOK IN TO THE CONTENT AND  learn the content carefully to understand it and not to mug up . STUDENT setting maximum questions ( one mark , two marks , three marks and 5 or 6 marks questions IS REWARDED AT  THE GNERAL ASSEMBLY

At our HASTI SCHOOL,   in every section of the class  ANDFOR EVERY SUBJECT *, WE MAKE GROUPS OF CHILDREN ( EACH GROUP HAS FIVE OR FOUR CHILDREN)  EVERY GROUP HAS TO FRAME THE QUESTIONS ( one group will set one mark questions , other group will frame two marks questions and so on ) on the chapter/lesson/ unit completed.

Children this way put their difficulties and prepare chapter wise question bank . the question are then solved by collaboration, group discussion .

This makes children learn (  believe in Our Hasti school believes that  PURPOSE OF TEACHIG IS TO MAXIMISE LEARNING AND  *IF THERE IS NO LEARNING THEN THERE IS NO TEACHING

Let us dive deep in this power of enquiry

While growing up, children tend to ask a lot of questions and this innate desire or curiosity to know the world by asking questions acts as a catalyst in communication.

Just like plants need the right amount of sunlight, water, clean soil, and some nutrients in the soil for food. Our learners at Hasti school are  taught the art of listening, speaking, receiving and giving feedback and most importantly *of asking questions.                                                                                                                                                                                                           *

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

Questioning Skill is  Important In The Teaching And Learning Process?

Child’s world is full of excitement and wonder. To strengthen the natural instinct of wondering, questioning is an important skill to be developed in learning, a good question can open minds.

It is a question that often leads us to wonder, reflect, discover and challenge new ideas, uncover new meaning by taking us from the known to unknown.

Asking questions is a worthy way of obtaining more information about a particular concept or idea, or simply starting a conversation and keeping it going.

Those with good questioning skills are often also very good listeners as they spend more time absorbing information from others than sharing their own judgements and opinions.

Questioning is at the heart of communication, it is an expansion of critical communication skills in children. A great question is equal to great communication  hence questioning is the key mantra to successful communication.

Promoting learner questions in class is a significant role of an Inquiry teacher. They are always striving hard to get their learners to be questioners, who are thirsty to find out new information, critique about the world around them and find out more about who am I as a learner?

Teachers  to Develop A Culture Of Questioning In Their Classrooms?

No one has ever explained why children are so full of questions outside of the school, and the conspicuous absence of display of curiosity about the subject matter of school lessons.

The real issue is in the classroom culture, here would point out that teachers have enormous power, their behaviour will determine an impact on the climate of questioning in the classroom.

A teacher’s curiosity infects the entire classroom in a positive way, they need to model curiosity and foster an environment where learners feel safe and comfortable in asking questions.

The answers you get depend on the questions you ask Whilst it raises a dialogue or a conversation which will lead learners in deep thinking, allow them to reflect on their own learning and find constructive solutions to problems and issues around them.

What Can WE Teachers Do to Improve Questioning Skills in Learners?

Try these 5 Magical strategies –

 –1.WHO ,2. WHY , 3.WHERE, 4.WHAT AND 5. WHEN

This strategy can be used in any subject focus.

WE MAY USE De Bono Six Thinking Hats – Using the mental metaphor from De Bono’s six thinking hats can help learners come up with the right questions and amplify their learning engagement.

Teachers often struggle with getting their learners to understand and ask good open ended questions. To get them to understand the different types of questions, the Question Quadrant is a tool first devised by Philip Cam (2006) while working with students and teachers in order to hone, sort and categorise learner questions. It is a tool which assists teachers to explicitly teach question types with the intention of using students’ questions to PLEASE KEEP POSTING YOUR VALUABLE SUGGESTIONS  , REMARKS TO IMPROVE FURTHER AND GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK

Wellbeing of students and educators

BLOG NO.220

Wellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life.

Well-being   our Hasti school  is a state in which pupils are able to develop their potential, learn and play creatively.

Concretely, well-being at Hasti school means

•           feeling safe, valued and respected

•           being actively and meaningfully engaged in academic and social activities

•           having positive self-esteem, self-efficacy and a sense of autonomy

•           having positive and supportive relationships with teachers and peers

•           feeling a sense of belonging to their classroom and school

•           feeling happy and satisfied with their lives at school

We believe that Pupils who experience well-being can build and enjoy positive relationships with others and feel belonging to their school community.

Research underlines that school bullying has devastating consequences on learners’ health and academic achievement

Around 20% of school children experience mental health problems, in particular anxiety and depression. Our School and teachers are  sufficiently prepared to deal with these issues and need to be supported.

The well-being of teachers and that of students is closely connected. Teachers need to experience a state of well-being themselves in order to be able to contribute to ensuring the well-being and mental health of their students.

Schools are key to the promotion of mental health and well-being among young people. Children and young people spend a considerable amount time at school during a critical period for the development of their personality and socio-emotional competences.

Incorporating socio-emotional learning, mental health, well-being and bullying prevention programmes in schools is one of the most effective ways to support the psychological well-being of children at our school.

This is in line with a more holistic vision of education, which recognises that children and adolescents need a balanced set of cognitive, social and emotional competences to achieve positive outcomes in school and in life.

The link between academic and socio-emotional learning has been clearly underlined by empirical evidence, including neuroscientific research, demonstrating that learning is a relational and emotional process. Addressing learners’ well-being is therefore key to raising educational outcomes

Let us dive deep in the subject of well being of students and teachers at school .

Teacher well-being is a positive emotional state that combines the personal needs and expectations of both learners and their teachers.

Cultivating a Research Mindset through Action Research

Hasti School is making efforts to cultivate  Research Mind set among student community of our school  . because A research mindset focuses not only on learning to answers but more on  questions,

*Mind sets play a significant role in determining life’s outcomes.

by understanding, adapting and shifting your mindset, you can improve your health, decrease your stress and become more resilient to life’s challenges.

There are Four well-known mindsets ;

growth mindset,

positive mindset,

entrepreneurial mindset, and

challenge mindset.

You see life through your own unique lens. This is your mindset – the assumptions and expectations you hold about yourself, your life and the situations around you.

Research shows that mindsets play a significant role in determining life’s outcomes. By understanding, adapting and shifting your mindset, you can improve your grade , health, decrease your stress and become more resilient to life’s challenges.

Mindsets are a set of assumptions that help you distill complex worldviews into digestible information and then set expectations based on this input.

While mindsets can be helpful for distilling information and managing expectations, they can also be maladaptive, lead to interpersonal problems and feelings of guilt, inadequacy, sadness and anxiety. But “the good news is mindsets are highly changeable, and if you are willing to learn the technology of changing your mindset and defeating your distorted thoughts, you can have significantly more happiness.”

Our Educators can successfully develop growth or research mind set among their students to make them perfect learners

With a growth mindset,  one  can change over time, and therefore you are more open to reflect, learn and grow from challenges.

Because failure is less threatening, you are more willing to embrace life’s challenges, take feedback as a learning opportunity and continue to learn and grow throughout life. With a growth mindset, you are also less likely to personalize setbacks.

With a fixed mindset, it can be hard to find motivation to work through perceived weaknesses, because the ability to change may seem as hopeless as changing your eye colour. In contrast, with a growth mindset, you’ll see your perceived weakness as a challenge that can be motivating — and even fun — to overcome.

A fixed mindset positions the student to believe that challenges cannot be overcome or that their skills cannot get better in a significant way.  Where as A person with a research and or  growth mindset, on the other hand, sees progression in a much different light. With effort, abilities improve.

To create the Growth research mind set Our school initiates to

1.         Create and ensure psychological safety. This means fostering an environment where everyone feels like they have the opportunity to speak and that their voice will be heard. …

2.         Align people into collaborative teams. …

3.         Embed research at every stage.

It is essential for teachers to adopt a research mindset and engage in action research. Action research empowers educators to actively investigate and improve their teaching practices, creating a positive and impactful learning environment for students

. By embracing action research, teachers set a tone of continuous growth, inquiry, and innovation in the classroom. This blog explores the importance of action research and highlights the value of nurturing a research mindset among teachers

Action research serves as a catalyst for change and improvement in classrooms.

It enables teachers to go beyond routine practices and delve into the complexities of teaching and learning.

By engaging in systematic inquiry, educators gain valuable insights into their students’ needs, teaching strategies, and curriculum design, leading to informed decision-making and evidence-based practices.

Action research empowers teachers to be active agents of change, addressing educational challenges and fostering a student-centered approach. Following are key benefits:

Enhancing Teaching Practices

Fostering Student Engagement and Success

Building a Culture of Collaboration

Inspiring Lifelong Learning

By embracing action research and cultivating a research mindset They become role models, demonstrating the value of curiosity, inquiry, and critical thinking.

When teachers adopt a research mindset, they instill in their students a thirst for knowledge, a passion for exploration, and the skills needed to become independent and reflective learners, equipping them for success in an ever-changing world. We at our school make consistent efforts to

a. Encourage Curiosity: Nurture a sense of curiosity among educators and students, fostering a culture of inquiry and exploration.

Metacognition

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE ,DONDAICHA

BLOG NO.219

Metacognition

metacognition is key to effective pupil learning:

it is a way for teachers to gauge how well their students understand their own learning processes and regulate their learning

,

The term metacognition refers to an individual’s ability to plan, monitor, evaluate, and make changes to their own learning behaviours in order to confront challenges more effectively.

For students, having metacognitive skills means

that they are able to recognise their own cognitive abilities, direct their own learning, evaluate their performance, understand what caused their successes or failures, and learn new strategies.

It can also help them learn how to revise. This is because it optimises their basic cognitive processes, including memory, attention, activation of prior knowledge, and being able to solve or complete a task

It makes them learn more efficiently and more effectively, and so they are able to make more progress.

a student with metacognitive skills might:

Recognise that they have trouble applying formulas in maths.

Think about the maths problems they have solved before, and the strategies they used.

Apply these strategies, assessing whether they are working or not.

Try a different strategy if the one they are using is not effective.

Reflect on how they performed in this task, and use this to inform their future work.

Metacognitive skills are useful across all subjects because they enhance the way one learns, as opposed to what you learn. They are also teachable.

The potential benefits of metacognition in learning

•           Higher achievement levels for the students. Metacognitive practices can also compensate for any cognitive limitations

•           Increased ability to learn independently.

•           Improved resilience. Identifying their successes and failures, increases students’ perseverance in getting better at their work.

•           It aids disadvantaged students.

•           Transferable knowledge. Metacognition helps students to transmit their knowledge and understanding including reading comprehension, writing, mathematics, memorising, reasoning, and problem-solving.

•           Effective

•           Emotional and social growth. Gaining awareness of their own mental states allows students to think about how to be happy, respected, and confident in themselves.

Levels of metacognitive learners comes from David Perkins (1992). There are four levels of learner:

1.         Tacit learners, who are unaware of their metacognitive knowledge and merely accept if they know something or not.

2.         Aware learners, who know about some of the kinds of thinking that they do, such as generating ideas, finding evidence, etc. However

3.         Strategic learners, who organise their thinking by using problem-solving, grouping and classifying, evidence-seeking, decision-making, etc.

4.         Reflective learners, who are not only strategic about their thinking, but also reflect upon their learning while it is happening.

Once you know what level students are on, you can plan your support accordingly. For example, with tacit learners, you will need to focus on all aspects of metacognition, guiding them through the process of learning. With higher-level learners, you can withdraw some support

Metacognitive Strategies & Activities for the Classroom

I have compiled a list of few  tips, strategies and activities involving metacognition that you could use alongside modelling and ‘You, Plan, Do, Review’. These are:

Learning/Thinking Journals

Try asking your students to keep personal learning journals, and assign them weekly questions for them to reflect on, such as:

•           What was easiest for me to learn this week, and why?

•           What was most challenging for me to learn, and why?

•           Which study strategies worked well?

•           Which study strategies didn’t work well, and what could I do differently next time?

•           Did my study habits work well for me? What effect did they have on my learning?

•           Which study habit could I improve upon next week?

•           What are my targets for next week?

Teacher may add many more questions you as per the type of learner and subjected to your methodology

Students  could also record ideas they have during a lesson and questions they want to ask, as well as reflecting upon how the ideas they have learnt connect to other topics.

The journal doesn’t necessarily need to be a notebook – your students could use any format that works well for them, including a *mind map, blog,, mobile phone app, or any thing else

KWL Charts

A KWL ( Know , what to know and Learnt) chart is a way of tracking the ‘You, Plan, Do, Review’ process. The idea is to create a chart for students  to use, with space for them to answer the following questions:

•           What do I know?

•           What do I **want to know?

•           What did I learn?                                                                                                                                                             These questions (know, want, and learn) make up the letters in KWL. At the beginning of the lesson, students can answer the first question what they already know that might help them in this lesson. This will activate their prior knowledge, and highlight any misunderstandings.

The second question provides you with ideas for future learning activities. Students could structure their answers in the form of ‘how…?’, ‘when…?’, or ‘why…?’ questions.

At the end of the lesson, students can answer ‘what did I learn?’, as well as filling in anything else they want to know that remains unanswered. It is good to reflect on their own cognitive growth, such as ‘before this lesson, I thought that _. Now I know that _.’

Rules About Asking for Help

Instead of getting students to put their hands up as soon as they need help, set some rules that make them more involved in the thinking process. For example, you could ask them to go to a fellow student – or group of students – to discuss it first, and only to ask you if they can’t find the answer together.

. Mnemonics

Teach your pupils techniques such as mnemonics to help them remember difficult information.

such as ROY G BIV to remember the colours of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). The same thing could be remembered in a mnemonic sentence, such as ‘Ram Yamuna of India York gave battle in vain’.

 Exam Wrappers very crucial

These are worksheets containing reflective questions that help students to think about their performance in a test or exam. You could give them to your pupils both before and after they receive their results and feedback.

The worksheets given out before they receive feedback should ask them to think about how they prepared for the exam – for example, which study strategies they used. Those given out after the feedback should make the student reflect on the mistakes they made*, and how they could prepare differently to ensure greater success in the future, making them strategic learners.

 Metacognitive Talk

Metacognitive talk involves talking through what you are thinking while you carry out a task. This can help students to focus and better understand their thought processes*

The questions your students should ask and answer out loud are:

•           What do I know about this topic?

•           Have I done a task like this before?

•           What strategies worked last time?

•           What do I need to do first?

•           How am I doing?

•           What should I do next?

•           Should I try a different strategy?

•           Who can I ask for help?

•           How well did I do at this task?

•           What could I do differently next time?

Reciprocal Teaching

This strategy allows students to take on the role of teacher and attempt to teach learning strategies to other students. For example, if they were teaching reading comprehension, they might show their fellow students how to question what they’ve read*, clarify things they don’t understand, summarise the text, and make informed predictions about what they have read*.

. Traffic Lights

Traffic lights can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom; in this instance, students could use them to signify what they found confusing or *challenging in a lesson (red),

what made them think differently about something (amber)*, and

what they understood well (green)*.

They could fill in a traffic light worksheet answering these questions at the end of each lesson. This method makes them reflect upon their learning, developing their metacognitive abilities. Smiling, frowning, or neutral faces could be used in the same way – this might be a good strategy for encouraging metacognition in the primary classroom.

. Reflexive Thinking

Talking about and becoming aware of biases – for example, societal biases – is a metacognitive process called reflexivity. Having classroom discussions about these topics encourages students to consider what they’re unconsciously thinking. Try talking about moral dilemmas, racism, wealth, poverty, and justice.

Goals

Encourage your students to set their own goals. This is one of the best ways for them to monitor their learning progress, and review whether they need to make any changes.

Encouraging metacognition in the classroom is a way to ensure that your students are learning effectively. This will help them throughout their lives by developing their resilience, memory, self-awareness, reasoning skills, and problem-solving abilities*

Academics vs SPORTS

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE ,DONDICHA

BLOG NO.218

The role of sports in  school has been a controversial topic for many years. Some say students need to focus more on their academics and forget about sports, while others say school should be fun and sports make it so.

Large number of  studies have shown that the benefits of participating in a sport far outweigh any potential risk.

One of the major concerns of students spending time participating in sports is that they take away from important class time, and they can also provide the student with unnecessary stress. Often, student athletes are attempting to balance sports, difficult classes, social lives, family time, and several other obligations.

Removing sports from the equation would free up students’ lives and make for a potentially less stressful environment. However, studies show the benefits of sports on student athletes are greatly beneficial to the overall well-being of the student.

Students who played sports exhibited either improved academic scores, or they maintained their current level of academic grading.

Overall, studies show that students who play sports do not allow their commitment to their team to affect their commitment to their education. As mentioned, grades often improve for the student athlete.

Another benefit to playing high school sports is that athletes also tend to have increased self-confidence which can be beneficial both on and off the field.

Our Hasti Public school’s survey reveals that children participating in various sports have their academics  either improved or remained the same and did not suffer due to the time commitment of sports.

Our Hasti Public school is renowned for its  excellent performance at National , State and  district level and holds  record of  producing large number of  sports persons( Boys and Girls) who have  represented in different school games , namely fencing , cricket and many other  at state and  National level .

Hasti Public School ,Dondaicha ,one of the best schools in Maharashtra has sports complex spread over area of 4.5 acre and  is equipped with advanced sports material for various games .school has 400 meter track*andother facilities for various track and field events. *HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL’S SPORTS COMPLEX HAS  (standardised  courts for   Basket ball , lawn tennis , volley ball , cricket ,foot ball and hockey in addition to courts for Kabbadi, khokho, archery . school has facility of squash , snooker ,  Billiards , table tennis and Badminton court.

However It is unfortunate that these two critical aspects of education, *academics and athletics, tend to be pitted against each other than to  realize for what they are – *sports and Academics are the pillars  that work together to create the moral fibre of today’s youth.

Research also clearly shows that it is exercise, activity, proper sleep, and a healthy diet that grow brain cells and promote learning – more so than study extra hours after school.

Students need to be physically active to develop cognitively, balance emotional well being, and to be better prepared for the academically challenging environment they have in school.

So the questions should not be academics or sports, *but *ACADEMICS AND SPORTS * that lead to better overall growth and performance all around for learners.

English to School Housekeeping Staff

HASTI PUBLIC SCHOOL & JR.COLLEGE ,DONDICHA

BLOG NO.216

Student Club at our Hasti public school to teach

Goal is to make interactions between students  and school stakeholders comfortable and easy

Proposed novel gesture .

In a gesture that speaks volumes of commitment to making the lives of people more comfortable with English language, it is proposed that students of our Hasti public school ,Dondaich through their ECC English Conversation Club will be  teaching English to group D employees and  housekeeping staff of the school.

These sessions are likely to be  held twice a week for 45 minutes each.

The idea is to empower the staff in their day-to-day activities and work, improve their spoken language fluency and instil a greater connection between them and the school community.

The housekeeping staff members expressed difficulties in communication between them, students, parents ,visitors and teachers, and hence planned to practice and improve their English.

The students will be  encouraged to start a club to achieve and fulfil the wishes of the housekeeping staff.

The student members include prefect , vice prefect , house captains , class monitors and rank holders and position holders of the school students club .

They will be supported by Hasti school faculty members, and members of English subject committee .

Students under the supervisio and guidance of faculty  will plan and organize the club and teach at suitable timings as per the housekeeping staff members’ convenience.

Considering difficulty of the  housekeeping members in communication with respect to their jobs, and hence *the ECC club will be  targeting their specific wishes – unique circumstances and situations in which they face the greatest difficulty.

The club will also be  working to improve the staff member’s overall simple spoken English language proficiency.

Vocabulary teaching is proposed to be  done through role-play scenarios, flashcards, lessons, and games to make the experience enjoyable for them as well as the students involved in teaching.

The club is supposed to be  focusing  on improving the housekeeping staff members’ individual spoken fluency, and teach them on a personal level to build a strong connection between students and the staff.

The ECC of  students of Hasti Publilc school Dondaicha   hopes to gradually incorporate better teaching methods and include more staff to have a greater impact on the school community and foster a greater sense of achievement for the housekeeping members.

“Through this initiative, students will learn to view the housekeeping members as more than just people in the background of school life.

Every English subject teacher and ECC members  will feel  truly grateful to be able to help them out in  this noble gesture

Furthermore, students will  realize just how difficult it is to organize a functional club and maintain it.

The club may  face challenges from deciding the venue, deciding timings, communicating effectively with staff and housekeeping members, and making the best use of the classes we will  give each week to teach   Also, teaching a language is very difficult, Syllabus preparation, what to teach and making sure all-important factors to be considered.

There will be definitely many organizational difficulties we need to  overcome, but in the end, our teamwork will bring us closer to our goal . We will do a lot more to achieve our objectives.”

This noble initiative. Empathy for the housekeeping staff members, recognising the significance of their role in the student body, realizing that the school does not comprise only students and teachers and a compassionate approach and attitude to the wider society are all values that we should carry and imbibe.

The initiative by students, teachers and administrative personnel to make the lives of non-teaching staff better and equip them with resources to help them grow will definitely be  very commendable and I hope everybody will benefit from this in a positive way.

YOUR FEEDBACK  ,suggestions, remarks & ,ideas for modification , will enhance the  reading value  .you may suggest different activities for the success of our this ambitious project of  *student’s ECC at our school. please  do visit our web site
