Assessments play a pivotal role in education, gauging student progress and informing teaching strategies.
In the modern era, we ,at our Hasti school, recognizing the importance of diversifying assessment methods to capture the full spectrum of student outcomes, making learning more authentic and engaging. The age-old reliance on traditional exams as the primary assessment tool is now under scrutiny.
Traditional Exams – Limitations
For ages, traditional exams and standardized tests have anchored educational assessment. Administered remotely, these exams can be a source of stress, potential bias, and demotivation. Relying on memorization, multiple-choice, or essay-based approaches.
The traditional examinations fall short in evaluating essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork.
Following are the limitations of traditional examinations T
a) Memorization over Understanding: Traditional exams tend to reward rote recall over genuine understanding. This method may overlook a student’s depth of knowledge and their ability to apply concepts critically. In traditional examination application part seems to be missing .
b) One-Size-Fits-All Approach: Standardized exam formats don’t always accommodate the varied learning styles, strengths, and interests of students. As a result, assessments can become unfair, failing to highlight individual competencies and areas for improvement.
c) Stress and Anxiety: The high-pressure environment surrounding exams can induce stress and anxiety in students. Such heightened emotions can adversely affect their performance, preventing them from showcasing their true potential.
At our Hasti school we are looking for a course evaluation method that puts the student’s knowledge to work, and therefore we are in favour of trying the alternative assessment method.
Unlike traditional evaluation methods that only assess the student’s knowledge, alternative assessment spurs the student to wear his or her thinking hat, and creatively apply the knowledge to solve a problem. Concept maps, portfolios, and open tests are some familiar examples of alternative assessments.
What is Alternative Assessment?
This is a method of evaluation that measures a student’s level of proficiency in a subject as opposed to the student’s level of knowledge. The overall goal of alternative assessment is to allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and execute tasks.
Alternative assessment is also called a performance test or authentic assessment because it is deeply rooted in one’s ability to do something by leveraging newly-gained knowledge.
You can ask your students to create a portfolio, work with others on specific projects or engage in any other type of activity that shows they have a full grasp of what has been discussed in the class or training.
let’s first look at some of the things alternative assessment is not*.
1. Alternative assessment is not a high-stake or standardized method of evaluating students’ knowledge.
2. It is not a replacement for other methods of classroom assessment like formative and summative assessment methods.
3. Alternative assessment does not measure the learner’s performance.
4. Results from alternative assessments are not presented as quantitative or numerical data.
We have noticed that Moving away from conventional exams, today’s educational landscape leans towards diverse methods that aptly capture 21st-century learning’s multifaceted nature. Embracing these methods we at our Hasti school trying to make learning more authentic and insightful and that is alternative assessment.
Alternative assessment is tailored to the specific needs and abilities of individual students.
It is an instructor-led assessment process. This means the teacher develops a unique method to measure the student’s ability.
Alternative assessment methods are flexible and continuously adaptable.
Examples of Alternative Assessment
• Portfolio
You can ask students to build out a portfolio that demonstrates their knowledge of what has been taught in a class. (A portfolio is a collection of the different tasks a student has executed in the course of the class) or training.
• Performance Test
Since alternative assessment is all about putting knowledge to work, we are going to design effective performance tests to help you rate a student’s level of skill or knowledge. A
• Open Tests
An open test is a method of assessment that allows learners to refer to course materials as they take on tasks or write tests and examinations at our Hasti school we call it as HASTI OPEN BOOK TEST .(HOBT) The questions in an open test require the student to provide responses that show how well they understand the course.
• Crib Sheet :- This is another form of open-book evaluation. Instead of bringing the entire course materials to a test or examination, the student selects important information from these materials to create some sort of abridged version called the crib sheet.
• Take-Home Assessment Another way to assess your students’ abilities is to give them take-home exercises. Take-home exercises typically check 2 boxes.
• Project-Based Assessments: Through hands-on, real-world projects, students can exhibit their grasp and application of concepts, stimulating creativity, critical thought, and problem-solving.
• Rubrics: These criteria-driven frameworks elucidate performance expectations. Whether holistic or detailed, they provide clarity on evaluations and improvement pathways.

At our Hasti school by giving special holiday home work where children do not need text books , notes on the topic etc to complete the assessment or homework .
Our Holiday homework is designed wherein children have a opportunities to display their understanding ,application and learning.
