We use this activity to introduce CHILDREN  to coding and to teach basic coding skills. *This STEM activity is so easy to set up*, it essentially requires no work or prep! All you need for this coding activity is a deck of cards, some tape, and some toys that you already have lying around your house or classroom.
This activity is an *example of a screen-free coding activity* or ‘coding unplugged’ activity. Coding doesn’t always mean you have to be attached to your computer!
 
*Algorithms*: At the most basic level, coding involves giving instructions to a computer to make something happen. In this activity, we will be practicing giving instructions to get from start to finish.. These instructions are an example of an algorithm. *An algorithm is simply a set of instructions*

This activity is SUPER easy to set up.  You want to create a grid with the deck of cards. I made a 7×7 grid with our deck. I used painter’s tape to secure the deck of cards to the floor.
Then  take a bunch of toys and placed them on the cards such that it would be difficult for a child  to figure out how to get from the start to the finish. Essentially you are creating a maze with the toys.
You *can use a  toy *car as your ‘robot*’. You can also use an action figure, a game piece, a sticker, or ANYTHING.
Start with your ‘robot’ in the starting position. You will need to give ‘coding instructions’ to the robot to get him to the finish line to claim the prize!
Coding for kids: coding instructions’ are given one at a time to direct the robot( here a car )  to the finish line (prize)
e.g. ‘ Move forward 3 cards’, ‘turn’ ‘move backward 1 card’ etc.
After each instruction, the ‘robot’ will move and then the child will have to make a decision as to what the next instruction should be.
This can also be done with a coding robot toy.

A Bulletin Board that Empowers Students to Help Each Other


One of the best pieces of advice I got as a young teacher was never do something for a student that they can do for themselves. This is not to say that we teachers shouldn’t be courteous and respectful – go ahead and hold a door or pick up a dropped pencil – but when it comes to things like classroom procedures, reading directions, or working with content, students should be the ones putting in the effort.
As a seventh-grade teacher, I create many scaffolds to help students find success. There are schedules External link to help students plan and reflect upon their class time and activity lists External link that provide them with different pathways to achieve growth. They allow students to make their own learning decisions rather than relying on me to make decisions for them.
However, for years, one scaffold in my classroom has remained far too teacher-centric for my liking. In an effort to help promote student autonomy, I have produced dozens of “How-To” guides. These one-page guides cover everything from Chromebook keyboard shortcuts to framing a counterargument.
While some students have used them, the guides have never really achieved their aims; I still end up spending time explaining the same procedures to students who, for whatever reason, don’t feel compelled to use the pre-prepared helps.
This year I opted to overhaul the role of “How-To” guides in my classroom. Rather than making them for the students myself, I am encouraging my students to take ownership over the process. One month in, the results are already better than I ever expected!
The Help Wanted Board
The first step was creating a way for students to get involved with the resource-making process. I designated a large bulletin board in my room as the Help Wanted Board. From there, I used a large piece of chart paper to create an initial list of five resources I needed to have created.
My initial list included:
• A classroom folder setup guide for new students
• Useful Chromebook keyboard shortcuts
• How to plug in a Chromebook
• How to submit work with Google Classroom
• How to create stronger weekly reflections with SeeSaw
Once created, each student-created resource would be pinned to the board so other students could borrow and use them.
Rather than forcing students to engage with my new initiative, I added “Create Help Wanted Board guides” to my students’ weekly activity lists as an ongoing, optional task for them to complete at their leisure.
The hope was that the board would encourage students to take ownership of the resource creation process, share their knowledge, and help each other. In order for it to work, I needed to get the students on board.
Promoting Student Buy-In
Getting middle school students to want to do something they aren’t required to do can be a tricky proposition. Teachers need to find ways to create authentic ways to get students to buy-in; my Help Wanted Board was no exception.
After taking a few minutes to explain my vision for the board, I set the hook: every time a student took down and used a resource, they would record the date, a helpfulness score (ranging from 1-3), and an optional review on the back. At any point, students have the opportunity to rework or revamp their guides based upon their peer feedback to try to improve them.
At the end of the term I would tally up the positive reviews and offer extra credit for the creators’ efforts. The best guides would be featured in the “Help Wanted Hall of Fame” and become permanent features on the board.
I banked on this combination of peer feedback and recognition of a job well done to help bring the project to life.
The Results So Far
One month in, every item on my initial “Help Wanted” list has been created. More importantly, every resource has been used.
Creators often stop by the board on their way in or out of class to see how often their guides are used. One student team has even updated their Chromebook shortcuts guide to “Version 2.0” based upon peer feedback.
In a matter of weeks, the Help Wanted Board has been able to create more student autonomy than my teacher-made guides have ever been able to achieve. Students are helping each other willingly and asynchronously with their resources made by and for kids.
This week my new list of Help Wanted requests has gone up and students are already contemplating their creations. This time, alongside my list is a blank sheet where students can request guides from other students. After only one day, there are two student requests for materials I have never considered making.
With little more than a blank bulletin board, some paper, and some pushpins, my students are doing for themselves what I once mistakenly believed I had to do for them; what’s more, they’re doing it better and learning from the process.

Curiosity in Kids


 “Why a twinkling star or say  the moon following us*?”

These questions should definitely sound familiar to you! Years ago you must have asked these same questions to your parents too . While a lot of times we ignore these questions asked by our preschool kids, it reflects a very important inherent quality in them – curiosity. 

Remember when an apple fell on Newton’s head and he almost made jam out of it? But why didn’t he? Because he was curious to find out about why the apple fell off the tree. Had he not been curious we would also be asking questions like our toddlers – “Why things that go up come down again?”  All pre-schoolers have a little Newton hidden inside them  somewhere. You simply need to let their curiosity bloom to allow them to scoop out a new discovery!

Quite often, questions asked by young kids get submerged in a classroom either due to a crunch of time or it being unrelated to the topic of discussion going on. However, in most cases, the teaching-learning methods used in the classroom does not provide the space for curiosity to bloom out of the minds of young learners . And so, the curiosity sort of gets buried as an unfulfilled desire to “know”.

 “When children are in pre primary school, one of the things that really defines them is their curiosity, how curious they are and so keen to learn new things.”

This is the importance of curiosity in the life of school-going kids although hard work is a crucial factor to walk on the path of success, curiosity is what drives the journey towards it! 

To push their journey of success, preschool kids need “a good pre primary school, one that really encourages this kind of curiosity in its children.” Encouraging new thoughts, ideas and most importantly questions asked by young minds are the primary steps towards appreciating and uplifting curiosity in kids. Most teachers have a “*ask me a question” session* at the end of a class which allows the students to raise their doubts and seek information. But the type of questions allowed to ask remains confined to the “syllabus” being taught and that is something that needs to be pushed out of its boundaries. And in the case of pre primary kids, patience is not their strong trait. They tend to follow their spontaneous nature and ask a question in the middle of the class! This is where a teacher’s reaction can make or break the kid’s morale . If the teacher allows the kid to proceed and answers the child or maybe politely request them to hold their thought and discuss it at the end of the class, the child will feel that his or her question matters. This not only makes them patient but also keeps the spark of curiosity alive!

On the other hand, *if the teacher has an opposite reaction and does not entertain impromptu questions from the young students, the child would think twice before asking questions * from the next class, thereby reducing their will to participate in classroom discussions. This might look like a small incident but in reality, little acts like these are what decides the degree of involvement of the child in the teaching learning process, not just physically but also mentally.

Body language should be welcoming enough for new questions, ideas, thoughts by the young learners. If they see you being interested in what they have to say, they will feel free to share their thoughts!

Curious kids are always active. It’s time for the teacher to be an active listener too!  Carefully listen to what they have to ask and answer their questions patiently.

Their questions and your answers can be turned the other way around. Why don’t you ask them a question and spark a conversation? This will give them the opportunity to think, analyze and come up with their own viewpoints!

Some topics may be difficult (and maybe boring) to teach, even for you! So why not turn them into something relatable to the young kids! Relating a concept to real life is known to help understand better than giving age-old examples time and again. Go ahead, try this in the next class!

A conversational tone, rather than passive lecture, can be incorporated into the teaching learning process in the classroom. This will help in creating a comfortable, judgement free environment for kids to fearlessly ask questions and spread curiosity among peers too!

One driving goal for elementary level mathematics education is to help children develop a rich understanding of numbers – their meanings, their relationships to one another, and how we operate with them.
One of the most overlooked tools of the elementary and middle school classroom is the number line. Typically displayed above the chalkboard right above the alphabet, the number line is often visible to children, though rarely used as effectively as it might be. When utilized in the elementary classroom, the number line has often used to help young children memorize and practice counting with ordinal numbers. Less often, perhaps, the number line is used like a ruler to illustrate the benchmark fractions like ½ or ¼. Beyond an illustration for these foundational representations of whole numbers and some fractions, however, the number line is underutilized as a mathematical model that could be instrumental in fostering number sense and operational proficiency among students.
importance of the number line as a tool for helping children develop greater flexibility in mental arithmetic as they actively construct mathematical meaning, number sense, and understandings of number relationships. Much of this emphasis has come as a result of rather alarming performance of young learners on arithmetic problems common to the upper elementary grades. For example, a study about a decade ago of elementary children in the Netherlands – a country with a rich mathematics education tradition – revealed that only about half of all students tested were able to solve the problem 64-28 correctly, and even fewer students were able to demonstrate flexibility in using arithmetic strategies. Number line, is a wonderful concept for learning mathematics & spiritual science as well.
Anyone who tells you math is only about numbers is not telling you the whole truth. In the case of number lines, it’s also important to know your left from the right, as this is the whole basis of the concept. You see, a number line helps students decide which number is greater or larger. The further to the right a number falls on a number line, the greater it is. On the other hand, the further to the left a number falls on the line, the smaller it is.
The bottom line is that number line gives you a visual picture to determine whether two or more numbers are greater or smaller than the others *. Think of it as a number map letting you know the value of numbers in comparison to each other. However, beyond the simplistic usage most elementary school children master early on, the number line has more complex usages. In fact, our friend the number line models all real numbers, from -16,000 to 275 trillion and beyond. *The number line shouldn’t be confused counters, as counters do just that; they count. But, the number line is also about measurement, making it necessary to start with our hero, zero.
To paint a picture of this, when you’re counting items, you don’t start with 0. No, you start at 1. But when measuring, such as with a ruler, we line up the ruler at one end of the object, marking it Zero

Now when you see a number line, you may think, hmmm, there are more numbers than that! A number line has the arrow on both sides for a reason. It shows that numbers go on forever. Additionally, just because there are small spaces between the numbers doesn’t mean other “numbers” don’t exist between them. After all, 1/2 or .5 could between the 0 and the 1. All numbers, fractions and decimals can also be placed on a number line.
Speaking of fractions, a common problem a great many students have is when they’re asked to put 1/2 on a number line. Their natural inclination is to put it between the 1 and the 2. However, of course, the right placement would be between the 0 and 1. This could be because 1 and 2 are the two numbers used in the 1/2 phrase or maybe because the common train of thought is that 1/2 means one of two.
It’s important to gain a good grasp of the number line early on in a child’s education, preparing him for use later on in high school Geometry and beyond. For example, math students will often scale numbers on the line with a logarthmic scale and using the scientific notation. They can use this method to show a sequence of events, such as in the history of the world, evolution, or distances to planets or stars etc.

    It is observed that children make chaos in classrooms more particularly in between two periods that is between the time period when one teacher leaves the class & the other teacher arrives in the class room .

2. School has introduced yet another unique & democratic system of self discipline* where in students council prepares three separate boxes for “causes” and three separate boxes for “consequence “ (self imposed penalty) punishments are all academic type and not a corporal punishment .

• Three separate boxes A,B,C have paper slips written with of types of causes ( mischief/ faults/ mistakes/ notorious actions)

• Similarly other 3 Boxes A,B,C have paper slips of penalty written on slips of paper
• A child who has been identified as a disruptive element by council of students of that class will have to *pick up one slip from punishment box and has to take the punishment written therein ,
• Student’s council of the class , comprising of 15 to 16in types of monitors/ monitresses ( *when max.students of the class are monitors the self discipline is automatically set * (ex. All subject monitors, cleanliness monitors,tiffin monitors , corridor monitor, home work monitor, meditation monitor ,uniform monitor ,Assembly monitors, house captains etc no punishment is administered by teachers or administrators,

It is discipline by the students and for the students
Self- discipline would create a specific routine for children, and guide them by ushering to new horizons. Discipline in kids is adamant but *self-discipline is Having the ability to array the prescribed tasks in an arranged order so that by doing them in chunks the enormity of the tasks will be decreased.
How can we cultivate self-discipline in children
Have a fruitful discussion with children about education
The child should know why he should study and thus we say discipline in kids is imperative. Enlighten him about the importance of studies and having a goal.
Divine his abilities and help him in studying Children are different, and like adults, they have different talents and abilities. Understand this while talking to them. If you can find out the talent of the child, try to guide him towards that destination.
Fix a time table
This is the duty of his or her guardian. If you create a suitable timetable, the child will follow it and after some time, it will become a definite routine. One of the key accomplishments of teaching self-discipline to your kids is to make them follow a routine, if they do it wholeheartedly, you can have relief and say proudly that there is a discipline in kids and your students.
